Traveling Guitar Foundation Strikes a Chord, Donating Instruments to Manalapan High School

In a heartwarming act of musical philanthropy, Manalapan High School’s music program received a significant boost thanks to the Traveling Guitar Foundation. Students were thrilled to discover a donation of five brand-new Schecter guitars, along with amplifiers, cables, and drum sets, all aimed at enriching their musical education. This generous contribution comes directly from the Traveling Guitar Foundation, an organization established in 2009 by a New Jersey guitarist with a passion for music and giving back.

Damon Marks, the founder of the Traveling Guitar Foundation, explained his motivation, stating, “Music was always an outlet for me, a positive outlet.” His hope is to provide that same positive avenue for students, especially at a time when arts programs often face budget cuts in schools. Recognizing this critical need, the Traveling Guitar Foundation actively steps in to support music education by donating instruments, conducting performances, and engaging in music outreach programs at over 100 schools both nationally and internationally.

Jose Maunez, the dedicated music director at Manalapan High School, anticipates the positive impact of these new instruments. “I think these new instruments will help bring more kids into the program that maybe are not so into the conventional instruments, like trumpet and trombone,” Maunez noted, emphasizing the appeal of guitars and drums to a broader range of students.

Dhilan Kotian, a junior at Manalapan High School, exemplifies this point. While Kotian participated in jazz band in his freshman and sophomore years, his interest waned due to a disconnect with the musical style. However, he found his passion for guitar outside of school. During a special performance at Manalapan High School by Marks’ band, “Frontiers Ultimate Journey Tribute,” Kotian was invited to play, showcasing the inspiring possibilities now available to students.

Kotian expressed his enthusiasm about the donation, stating, “By adding these instruments to Manalapan High School, I think it’s just a great way for kids to pick up the instrument.” Thanks to Damon Marks and the Traveling Guitar Foundation, aspiring musicians at Manalapan High School will have enhanced opportunities to explore their musical talents and discover the joy of playing the guitar and other instruments. This donation ensures that music education remains vibrant and accessible for future generations of students.
