It’s been a year since I embarked on an extraordinary adventure: traveling to Antarctica. Like a select few, I ventured to this remote, frozen wilderness, a destination that had captivated my dreams for years. I found myself in a three-person cabin on the Ocean Endeavor, an expedition vessel accommodating around 200 passengers. Sharing a cabin with two strangers was a minor detail for someone with hostel experience. While the trip was physically and financially demanding, as anticipated, and unpredictable Antarctic weather presented challenges, my journey was nothing short of life-changing. The Ocean Endeavour was far from a typical cruise mega-ship. Booking my Antarctica adventure in 2019 meant securing a significantly lower price than current offerings from Intrepid Travel. Their website now lists the most affordable remaining cruise for the season at approximately $8,000 per person for a triple interior cabin. Increased demand and fuel costs have driven prices up, but shared cabins remain a more budget-friendly option compared to single rooms, which can exceed $10,000 with Intrepid.
Having previously worked in a hostel, I was comfortable with communal living. Cabin sharing proved to be a great way to meet solo travelers quickly.
Sharing a cabin and bathroom with my roommates was seamless, and it significantly reduced the overall trip cost. Our triple cabin, designed for four, was surprisingly spacious, enhancing our comfort throughout the 11-day journey. Sharing a cabin also highlighted the diverse age range of Antarctica travelers; one of my roommates was a solo traveler in her 70s, full of captivating stories, reminding me that Antarctica expeditions appeal to all ages.
Antarctica’s Unpredictability: Weather-Related Setbacks

We managed to lift spirits with a polar plunge and some celebratory drinks as we sailed homeward.
Zodiac Excursions: The Heart of the Antarctica Experience
On our voyage’s final breakfast, my group shared our most cherished moments. For me, the Zodiac boat excursions through Antarctica’s pristine landscapes were the highlight. Observing the immense white desert from the Ocean Endeavour’s deck was one experience, but gliding through icy waters on a Zodiac, getting incredibly close to colossal icebergs and abundant wildlife, was truly transformative.
From Antarctic birds and humpback whales to chinstrap penguins and seals, the wildlife encounters were breathtaking. The sheer tranquility made me forget the biting cold, wind, and rain.
Reflecting on these moments, any frustrations melted away. The trip fostered incredible connections and provided some of the most extraordinary experiences of my life. Despite seasickness and disappointments, the chance to witness Antarctica’s unparalleled beauty made every challenge and discomfort utterly worthwhile.
