My recent return to the Azores confirmed what I already knew: this archipelago is truly magical. My first trip was so incredible that I had to experience it again, and it lived up to every wonderful memory. Each day in the Azores unfolds like a page from a fairy tale. The islands are lush and green, impeccably maintained, and dotted with charming cows. Volcanic landscapes are always within view, adding to the dramatic beauty. During this trip, we focused on exploring São Miguel and spent a few memorable days on Pico. We also passed by Faial, and I’m already dreaming of a future visit to Flores. Island hopping in the Azores is facilitated primarily by Azores Airlines for flights and ferries for shorter distances. Traveling from São Miguel to Faial, we opted for a quick and convenient 25-minute ferry from Faial to Pico after flying into São Miguel.
For those beginning their Azores Travel adventure in São Miguel, Ponta Delgada makes an excellent base. Staying in the main hub offers easy access to the entire island and allows you to enjoy the town’s delightful restaurants, cafes, and shops on foot. We found a gem in Casa da Cidade, a charming guest house right in the heart of town. Owned by a lovely couple, they meticulously renovated Pedro’s childhood home just a year ago. Their friendly dog was a highlight of our mornings, and the hosts struck a perfect balance of warmth and attentiveness during breakfast before letting guests set off for the day. With just four guest rooms, Casa da Cidade feels intimate and exclusive. The comfortable beds and high-quality linens ensured restful nights. We spent two nights here, perfectly positioned to explore the western side of São Miguel in our first few days.
On both of my Azores travel experiences, the Furnas Boutique Hotel in Furnas has been my absolute favorite place to stay on São Miguel. The thermal pools are undeniably the main attraction, and I dedicated much of my time to relaxing in their soothing waters. While the rooms are somewhat compact and the dining room has a cafeteria-like feel, and the food (excluding breakfast) is just average, these minor points fade into insignificance compared to the exceptional relaxation offered. We indulged in spa treatments, which were quite enjoyable, and I even appreciated having access to a gym for a change of pace. The hotel staff are consistently helpful and welcoming. I truly miss those incredible pools and already look forward to returning to the Azores and the Furnas Boutique Hotel.
