The Maryland House Travel Plaza, a frequently visited stop along Interstate 95 near Aberdeen, MD, is set to become even more convenient for electric vehicle drivers. Tesla, in collaboration with Maryland state transportation authorities and Areas USA, the plaza operator, is installing a new Supercharger station at this key location. This development promises to significantly enhance EV travel options along the busy I-95 corridor.
Located strategically on I-95, the Maryland House Travel Plaza serves a massive volume of travelers annually. This new Tesla Supercharger station bridges a crucial gap in the charging network, positioned roughly 34 miles south of the Supercharger in Newark, Delaware, and about 50 miles north of the Laurel, Maryland Supercharger location. This placement ensures smoother, longer journeys for Tesla owners and contributes to a more robust EV infrastructure in the region.
Maryland House Travel Plaza Location on I-95 for Tesla Superchargers and EV Charging
According to Carlos de Jesus, Director of Operations for Areas USA, the Maryland House Travel Plaza will host eight Tesla Supercharger stalls. These are anticipated to be operational by mid-October. Tesla Superchargers are well-known for their rapid charging capabilities, capable of delivering up to 170 miles of range in approximately 30 minutes, and are exclusively available to Tesla vehicle owners. Tesla will also cover the electricity costs associated with these Superchargers, making it a free amenity for Tesla drivers.
Further enhancing the appeal of Maryland House as an EV-friendly stop, plans are also underway to install universal DC fast charging stations. These chargers, designed for compatibility with a wide range of electric vehicles utilizing connectors like CHAdeMO and SAE Combo, will be located in a separate area within the travel plaza. Areas USA intends to partner with a charging network provider, separate from Tesla, to bring these universal charging options to fruition soon.
The Maryland House Travel Plaza is one of the most heavily trafficked travel plazas in the United States, catering to almost 3 million visitors each year. To ensure travelers are aware of these new EV charging facilities, the operator plans to promote the availability of both Tesla Superchargers and universal chargers on video monitors within the plaza building, maximizing visibility and usage. Looking ahead, the Chesapeake House Travel Plaza, situated about 15 miles north of Maryland House, is also being considered for future EV charging installations. The decision regarding Superchargers at Chesapeake House, including the number of stalls, will be informed by the usage data collected from the first year of operation at the Maryland House location. This phased approach allows for data-driven decisions to optimize the EV charging infrastructure along this vital stretch of I-95.
