The Ramapo Travel Plaza, a key rest stop on the southbound New York State Thruway, has officially reopened its doors to travelers. Located between Exits 16 and 15A, this renovated service area at mile marker 33 in Sloatsburg, NY, welcomed back drivers on Wednesday, marking the completion of a significant phase in the Thruway Authority’s ongoing $450 million investment to revamp its 27 rest areas. Closed since January 2023 for a comprehensive rebuild, the Ramapo Travel Plaza is ready to serve the approximately 90,000 vehicles that travel this corridor daily, including both commuters and tourists.

Travelers stopping at the newly reopened Ramapo Travel Plaza southbound will discover a range of updated and popular vendors designed to enhance their journey. The service area now boasts a Starbucks, complete with a convenient drive-thru for those on the go, alongside Shake Shack and Panera for meal options. Applegreen-C Store provides a convenient stop for travel essentials, and Taste of NY products offers a selection of local goods. The early afternoon on Wednesday saw the parking lot filling up quickly, suggesting strong initial interest, possibly amplified by lane closures north of the service area.
While the southbound Ramapo Travel Plaza is now operational, renovations continue at the northbound Sloatsburg rest stop. Situated between Exits 15A and 16, the northbound service area closed in September 2023, following the Labor Day holiday. The anticipated reopening for the northbound Ramapo Travel Plaza is set for the fall. During the ongoing construction, the Sunoco gas station at the northbound location remains accessible to travelers. Upon completion, the northbound Sloatsburg Travel Plaza is expected to feature a similar variety of food and beverage options, including Chick-fil-A, Shake Shack, Panda Express, Dunkin’, and Starbucks, in addition to an Applegreen C-Store. This comprehensive renovation project across the New York State Thruway aims to modernize and improve the travel experience for all drivers.
