We’ve put a range of packable towels to the test, comparing them against a standard cotton towel to understand what truly makes a great travel companion. We evaluated these towels based on key features that matter most to travelers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Our testing process involved seven critical criteria: price, comfort, design, wicking ability, drying time, odor resistance, and packability. Every towel was washed and dried beforehand to ensure a level playing field. While we didn’t formally score weight and size, we noted how these aspects played a role when comparing similar travel towel options.
Key Considerations When Choosing a Travel Towel
Comfort and Feel
Comfort is subjective. Some prefer the textured feel of certain fabrics, while others favor the smooth sensation of microsuede travel towels. To assess comfort, we had individuals feel each towel and share their preferences, helping us understand the range of comfort levels available.
Design and Features
Design encompasses the towel’s construction quality and any features that enhance or detract from its usability. Fabric quality and stitching are paramount. A crucial design element is a hanging loop – essential for quick drying and hygiene. Texture is also vital; it impacts both water absorption and the towel’s ability to effectively remove dirt rather than just spreading it around. A travel towel that is too slick will simply glide over your skin, leaving you feeling damp and uncomfortable.

Wicking and Absorbency
A primary function of a travel towel is to effectively wick away moisture, leaving your skin feeling dry. We tested this rigorously, especially in real-world conditions at the beach. We wanted to see how these towels performed against saltwater and sand, evaluating their ability to clean skin while drying.
Drying Time Efficiency
To determine the fastest-drying travel towels, we applied a consistent amount of water to each and timed how long it took for them to become dry to the touch. To standardize this, we measured water usage by having testers shower and weigh their towels before and after drying themselves until they felt comfortable getting dressed. This helped us determine that approximately ½ cup (225 milliliters) of water is typically removed from the body after showering. We then applied 4 ounces of water to each travel towel and timed their drying time on a clothesline.
Odor Resistance and Antimicrobial Properties
Odor resistance is a significant factor, especially for travel towels that may be used multiple times before washing. Antimicrobial finishes are often advertised as beneficial for odor control and reducing the need for frequent washing. Travel towels can easily be used numerous times before washing, so preventing musty or dirty smells after just a few uses is essential. Many travel towels claim antibacterial coatings, and we aimed to verify their effectiveness.

Our odor resistance test involved taking the towels to the beach, soaking them in 16 ounces of seawater, wringing them out, and sealing them in plastic bags for 48 hours. Afterward, we assessed their odor. While most remained fresh, particularly those with antimicrobial treatments, some exhibited surprisingly strong unpleasant smells.
Packability and Portability
Beyond drying performance, a crucial aspect of a travel towel is its packability. These towels are designed to be compact for travel. Some come with their own cases, but our main focus was on how small each towel could be compressed, making it easy to fit into luggage or backpacks.
Price vs. Value
Price is always a consideration. For travel towels, where there’s a wide range of prices and many products claim similar capabilities, the value proposition is key. Paying more doesn’t necessarily guarantee a better travel towel, so understanding the features and performance relative to the cost is important.
