While you could easily spend months exploring this incredible country, a well-planned 2-week Vietnam Travel Itinerary allows you to experience the highlights and create unforgettable memories. For first-time visitors, crafting the perfect trip is key to unlocking Vietnam’s magic. Let me guide you through my recommended 2-week Vietnam itinerary, designed to make your first adventure truly spectacular.
Days 1-2 – Ho Chi Minh City: Exploring the Southern Hub
Explore Ho Chi Minh City's vibrant streets and historical landmarks
While Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, wasn’t my absolute favorite destination in Vietnam, this dynamic southern metropolis is an essential starting point for any Vietnam travel itinerary. As the country’s former capital, it’s steeped in history, particularly relating to the Vietnam War. Immerse yourself in this history with visits to numerous museums and historical sites, providing crucial context for your journey through Vietnam. A must-do is a half-day tour to the Cu Chi Tunnels, an intricate network of underground tunnels used by the Viet Cong during the war. Despite being slightly claustrophobic, I found this experience incredibly insightful and worthwhile.
Highlights: Reunification Palace, Cu Chi Tunnels, Ben Thanh Market, and enjoy panoramic city views from The View Rooftop Bar.
Day 3 – Mekong Delta: A Glimpse into Rural Vietnam
To truly appreciate Vietnam’s charm, venturing into the countryside is essential. The Mekong Delta offers your first immersive experience of rural Vietnamese life. Numerous day trips to the Mekong Delta depart daily from Ho Chi Minh City, making it easily accessible. These tours typically include enchanting boat rides through the intricate waterways of the delta, a visit to Tortoise Island, and a fascinating glimpse into the daily lives of locals. With transportation and a delicious traditional lunch often included, these tours are excellent value and a fantastic way to experience the Mekong Delta’s beauty.
Day 4 – Da Nang and Ba Na Hills: Coastal City and Fantasy Escape

Next, it’s time to journey north to the coastal city of Da Nang. Affordable domestic flights are readily available for a quick transfer, or for budget-conscious travelers, overnight buses offer a way to save on accommodation costs while maximizing your time in the city. The primary attraction in Da Nang is undoubtedly Ba Na Hills. This mountaintop resort and theme park, styled with European architecture, is a truly surreal and unforgettable destination. It’s home to the iconic Golden Bridge, held aloft by giant stone hands, which has become an Instagram sensation. Even the cable car ride to the resort is an experience in itself, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Days 5-6 – Hoi An: Ancient Town Charm and Relaxation

Hoi An quickly became one of my favorite places in Southeast Asia, and a highlight of my Vietnam trip. This charming, laid-back town provides the perfect atmosphere to unwind and relax. Indulge in incredible culinary experiences and enjoy the ambiance of the quaint riverside bars. Hoi An is renowned for its skilled tailors, where you can have custom-made suits or dresses created for surprisingly affordable prices, sometimes as low as £20. Don’t miss strolling through the enchanting lantern-lined streets of the UNESCO-listed Ancient Town.
Highlights: Explore Hoi An Ancient Town, relax on An Bang Beach, visit the historic Japanese Covered Bridge (Cau Chua Pagoda), and savor the local Cao Lau noodle specialty.
Day 7 – Hai Van Pass: Vietnam’s Most Scenic Drive
Experience the breathtaking Hai Van Pass by motorbike or car
Famously featured on Top Gear, the Hai Van Pass, connecting Hoi An and Hue, is widely regarded as Vietnam’s most beautiful road. The most exhilarating way to experience it is on a motorbike. However, for less experienced riders, it might be too challenging. A fantastic alternative is to take a guided motorbike tour of the Hai Van Pass with a professional rider. This allows you to soak in the stunning views while a support car handles your luggage. Your experienced guide will know the best viewpoints for photo opportunities. If motorbikes aren’t your preference, hiring a private car and driver for the day is also a reasonably priced option. Ensure you request stops at the Marble Mountains and enjoy lunch at one of the delicious seafood restaurants along the coast.
Day 8 – Hue: Imperial City and Royal History

Hue, the former imperial capital, is famous for the Imperial City, a sprawling walled citadel filled with magnificent pagodas, temples, and serene gardens. Spend a significant part of your day exploring the hidden corners and immersing yourself in the historical grandeur of this site. In the evening, head to the Hue walking street for dinner. While it might be slightly pricier and less traditional than other local eateries, it’s a lively spot to enjoy street performers, reflecting Hue’s reputation as a musical city.
Days 9-10 – Ninh Binh: “Halong Bay on Land”
Explore the stunning landscapes of Ninh Binh, often called "Halong Bay on Land"
Often referred to as “Halong Bay on land,” the breathtaking Ninh Binh region is guaranteed to be a highlight of your 2 week vietnam travel itinerary. Take a tranquil boat trip in a traditional sampan rowed by a local guide – often incredibly skilled at steering with their feet! – through Tam Coc. Glide through caves, past towering limestone karsts, and through preserved wetlands. Rent a bicycle and explore the area at your own pace. Visit Bich Dong Pagoda, a popular landmark, and be sure to climb beyond the main temple to reach the upper levels for the most rewarding panoramic views. The next day, challenge yourself with a climb up Lying Dragon Mountain (Hang Mua Caves) for an even more expansive vista of the entire Ninh Binh region. It’s a steep climb, but the view is absolutely worth the effort.
Day 11 – Hanoi: Northern Charm and Bustling City Life

In my opinion, Hanoi possesses a unique character that sets it apart from Ho Chi Minh City. Whether you’re wandering through the captivating streets of the Old Quarter or relaxing by the serene Hoan Kiem Lake, it’s easy to forget you’re in the heart of a bustling capital city. For iconic photos, visit Train Street, where a working railway line runs directly through a residential street, or explore the numerous Instagram-worthy cafes scattered around the city. For history enthusiasts, Hanoi offers a wealth of attractions, from ancient pagodas and temples to war memorials and museums.
Highlights: Explore the Old Quarter, visit Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Ngoc Son Pagoda, the Temple of Literature, and experience the unique Train Street.
Days 12-13 – Cat Ba Island and Ha Long Bay: Iconic Natural Wonder
Cruise through the breathtaking limestone karsts of Ha Long Bay
I know it’s a classic destination, but Ha Long Bay truly lived up to and exceeded all my expectations. It had been a dream of mine for years, and I was not disappointed. A Vietnam travel itinerary is simply incomplete without experiencing Ha Long Bay. To fully appreciate its beauty, I recommend staying on Cat Ba Island and taking a boat trip from there. This allows you to enjoy a day cruise while also exploring Cat Ba Island’s national park, visiting the historic hilltop fort, and enjoying the island’s relaxed atmosphere.
Day 14 – Return to Hanoi: Departure and Last Impressions
Head back to Hanoi for your final day in Vietnam. Whether you choose to browse the markets for last-minute souvenirs, savor one last taste of delicious Vietnamese cuisine, or simply soak in the city’s atmosphere, it will be hard not to start planning your return trip already!
