Dreaming of exploring the world but worried about the cost? You’re not alone. Many travelers believe that seeing the world requires a hefty bank account, but that’s simply not true. The truth is, adventure doesn’t have to break the bank. In fact, some of the most enriching and memorable travel experiences can be found in countries where your dollars, euros, or pounds stretch much further. Imagine spending the same amount on a full day of exploring ancient ruins, vibrant markets, and stunning landscapes as you would on just a single dinner in a major Western city. This is the reality of budget travel, and it opens up a world of possibilities.
For over a decade, as a full-time travel blogger, I’ve personally explored countless corners of the globe. This isn’t just theoretical advice; these recommendations come from firsthand experience in destinations where affordability meets incredible experiences. We’re not talking about cutting corners on quality or safety, but rather smart travel in countries where the cost of living is lower, allowing you to maximize your travel budget and immerse yourself in diverse cultures without financial strain. Forget the notion that Costa Rica or South Korea are budget-friendly (spoiler: they aren’t!). Instead, let’s focus on destinations where your travel dreams can truly take flight without emptying your wallet.
Budget travel is liberating. It shifts your focus from worrying about expenses to embracing experiences. It allows for spontaneity and deeper immersion into local life. In many of the countries we’ll explore, a daily budget of $35 to $50 per person can comfortably cover accommodation, food, transportation, and activities. Think about it: for the price of a single average meal in cities like London or New York, you could fund an entire day’s adventure in destinations like Vietnam, Mexico, Indonesia, or Morocco.
Ready to discover where your travel budget can take you the furthest? Let’s dive into a curated list of some of the Cheapest Countries To Travel, broken down by region and travel style, all based on personal experience and a passion for affordable exploration.

7. Indonesia
Indonesia, a vast archipelago, offers remarkable affordability for Western travelers. My recent 6-week trip in 2024 reaffirmed just how budget-friendly this diverse country can be, and I’ll be sharing more details about that journey soon.
Komodo Islands in Indonesia, an example of diverse and affordable destinations beyond Bali.
While Bali remains a popular favorite, its increasing popularity has led to concerns about overtourism. Fortunately, Indonesia is geographically larger than the United States, with Bali being just a tiny speck in this expansive archipelago. Beyond Bali lies a wealth of islands and regions offering even more affordable travel experiences.
Consider exploring Bali’s neighboring islands of Lombok and Java, the spectacular Komodo Islands and rural Flores, or venturing further to Sumatra, West Nusa Tenggara, or Sulawesi.
During my recent trip to Sulawesi, I found that guesthouses or homestays with air conditioning typically cost around 10 EUR or 12 USD per night. Delicious meals like stir-fries in local restaurants often cost only $2 to $2.50, making daily expenses incredibly manageable.
From pristine white-sand beaches to lush jungles and savannahs, and from active volcanoes emitting blue flames to remote rainforests where you can encounter orangutans in their natural habitat – Indonesia is a budget traveler’s paradise.

Imagine charming medieval towns, ancient fortified churches, and the majestic Carpathian mountain range. Transylvania is ideal for spring or summer trips, and equally enchanting in winter, boasting affordable ski resorts and snow-covered castles.

Cappadocia hot air balloons in Türkiye, offering culture and affordability near Europe.
Straddling both East and West, Türkiye, once home to the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, boasts Roman ruins, ancient cave cities, bustling bazaars, and of course, stunning Mediterranean beaches.
While recent currency fluctuations have made Türkiye less inexpensive than in previous years, it remains a relatively affordable destination compared to global standards. Prices increased in 2024, making it not quite the bargain it once was, with some arguing that Greece now offers better value. However, it still provides a fantastic travel experience without breaking the bank.

Colombia is an amazing country to explore. Dispelling outdated perceptions, modern Colombia is far removed from the narratives of shows like Netflix’s Narcos (set over 50 years ago!).
Cartagena, Colombia, a vibrant and budget-friendly destination in the Americas.
Colombia offers a remarkable diversity of landscapes, boasting both Pacific and Atlantic coasts, the Amazon rainforest, and the Andes Mountains. Add to this the vibrant cities of Medellín and Bogota, the warmth of the Colombian people, and their dynamic culture, and you have one of the best budget-friendly travel destinations in the Americas.
I revisited Colombia in 2022 and updated my travel guides. Check out my tips for a one-week beach and nature getaway in Colombia and recommended Colombia itineraries.
While generally safe, travelers should still review current safety advice before visiting, and solo male travelers should exercise caution in Medellín. However, the welcoming north coast and coffee region are among the areas that consistently receive rave reviews from tourists.
Budget Estimates:
- Backpacker Budget: $30 per day
- Mid-range Budget: $50 per day
Must-See Highlights: Caribbean beaches, Tayrona National Park, and Medellín.

Mostar bridge in Bosnia & Herzegovina, a historic and affordable European destination.
The medieval town of Mostar is a standout highlight, its iconic bridge once connecting trade routes as far as Venice and Constantinople. I was also deeply impressed by Sarajevo, the capital city, with its genuine warmth, fascinating architecture, and charming historic quarter. Sarajevo is delightfully budget-friendly and one of Europe’s truly underrated capital cities.
Budget Estimates:
- Backpacker Budget: $30 per day
- Mid-range Budget: $50 per day
Must-See Highlights: Sarajevo and Mostar.
Best Time to Visit: Peak season in July-August, Shoulder season in May-June and September.

16. India
India, often described as a “country of contrasts,” truly lives up to this travel cliché. While poverty exists, India’s economy is booming, and the range of development and prices is striking.
Taj Mahal in India, a country of contrasts and budget-friendly travel options.
A modern mid-range hotel in central Mumbai might cost upwards of $60 USD per night, while a room in the desert city of Jaisalmer could be as low as $5. This vast disparity is characteristic of India. However, if you’re traveling on a budget, India is definitely achievable on a shoestring.
Due to its intensity and the patience it sometimes requires, India might not be the easiest first overseas destination. However, certain regions are known for being more traveler-friendly, including the northern desert region of Rajasthan and the relaxed tropical state of Kerala in the south.
Budget Estimates:
- Backpacker Budget: $15-20 per day
- Mid-range Budget: $40 per day
Best Time to Visit: Peak season from November to February, Shoulder season in October, and March.
17. Bolivia
Landlocked Bolivia is often overlooked in favor of beach destinations, but this mountainous country has a wealth to offer. It’s also South America’s ultimate budget destination, where you can comfortably travel on around $20 per day.
Salar de Uyuni salt flats in Bolivia, an otherworldly and affordable South American destination.
Bolivia boasts some of the continent’s most incredible sights, such as Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake, and the breathtaking, otherworldly salt flats of Salar de Uyuni. With its remote feel and sense of adventure, Bolivia is one of my favorite backpacker destinations in South America.
While my last trip to Bolivia was in 2014, our contributor George visited in 2023 and wrote this updated Bolivia travel guide.
Direct flights to Bolivia can be limited, but the country pairs well with neighboring Peru, whose capital, Lima, has excellent international connections.

Beyond its countless pristine coastlines, the Philippines is a culturally fascinating destination, blending Asian influences with Spanish and US colonial heritage. You’ll also discover spectacular rice terraces in the north and incredible natural landscapes with jungles and volcanoes to explore.

Argentina’s economy has faced challenges for decades and is currently undergoing significant reforms. Currency exchange rate fluctuations and peso devaluation have made Argentina somewhat more expensive for tourists compared to past years, which may surprise travelers familiar with “old prices.” However, it remains relatively inexpensive by US or Western European standards.
Iguazu Falls in Argentina, a highlight in a country with fluctuating affordability.
While Patagonia, due to its remoteness and travel distances, isn’t necessarily a budget destination, costs are generally very low in the north. Buenos Aires, the capital, has become a popular hub for digital nomads, while the wine regions around Mendoza, the magnificent Iguazu Falls, and the Quechua areas around Salta offer incredible sightseeing opportunities.

21. Cuba
“See it before it changes” is a common phrase associated with Cuba, and stepping into the country still feels like traveling back in time.
Vintage car in Cuba, a unique and surprisingly affordable Caribbean island.
Before visiting, I often heard Cuba described as expensive, but this perception seems based on state-run luxury hotels catering to high-spending tourists. Travel in Cuba can actually be quite budget-friendly, especially when utilizing the extensive network of family-run Casas Particulares (Cuban-style Airbnbs), offering affordable and charming local accommodation.
With a lack of typical globalization, vintage cars still lining the streets, and of course, the abundance of rum, sun, and salsa – spending time in Cuba is a guaranteed unique experience.
It’s worth noting that Cuba has faced increased economic challenges recently, including power outages, so checking the current situation before planning a trip is recommended.
Budget Estimates:
- Backpacker Budget: $40 per day
- Mid-range Budget: $65 per day
Explore the unique charm of Cuba
22. The Baltic States
Often overlooked, nestled between the Nordic countries and Russia, are the three small Baltic states: Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
Old Town Riga, Latvia, showcasing Baltic charm at budget-friendly prices.
Why visit? Think “Scandinavia on a budget.”
With a little imagination, the Baltics might remind you of Finland with their vast woodlands, peat bogs, lakes, and deep red log cabins. The locals share a fondness for cross-country skiing, saunas, and vodka. A key difference? Costs are about a third of what you’d find in the Nordic countries.
I particularly enjoyed traveling in Estonia, which blends rich history and charm with a thriving tech startup scene. While enjoying local IPAs in Tallinn, I met friendly Estonians sharing stories of IPOs. It’s a fascinating mix of modern and traditional.
While Tallinn’s tourist center can be slightly pricier, the country as a whole is very affordable. Excellent meals can be found for under 7 Euros, and hotel rooms range from 30 to 40 Euros per night.
Budget Estimates:
- Backpacker Budget: $35 per day
- Mid-range Budget: $70 per day
Discover Estonia and the Baltics
23. Guatemala
In Central America, Costa Rica often takes center stage as a tourist destination due to its abundant wildlife and well-developed ecotourism. However, Guatemala deserves strong consideration as well. While perhaps not as developed, its landscapes possess a wow-factor that few countries can match.
Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, a stunning and affordable Central American destination.
Hidden within its northern jungles are the Mayan temples of Tikal, a truly breathtaking sight, especially at sunrise. Equally stunning is the highland Lake Atitlan in the south, surrounded by volcanoes and charming villages where life moves at a wonderfully slow pace. 25. Republic of Georgia
Georgia (the country) is a captivating destination situated at the crossroads of Asia and Europe. It’s incredibly affordable, sometimes even rivaling the low costs of countries in South or Southeast Asia.
Hiking in the Caucasus Mountains, Georgia, a cheap and adventurous destination.
While Georgia is currently navigating political complexities as it decides between Western and Russian alignment, it remains a wonderful and safe destination for travelers.
In its unique capital, Tbilisi, you’ll find crumbling facades of traditional wooden Georgian houses alongside Soviet-era architecture and bold contemporary designs. I loved my time in Tbilisi and was amazed by its vibrant soul and character. From Tbilisi, explore the stunning Caucasus Mountain range, swim in the Black Sea, or visit ancient hilltop monasteries, some even built within caves.
With 1-year visas available for remote workers, Georgia is an ideal digital nomad hub conveniently close to Europe.
