So, it’s surprising that I only recently discovered Rummikub, a game that beautifully blends elements of both. The Rummikub Travel Set brings all the enjoyment of the original into a conveniently sized package, perfect for families on the move.
This travel version of Rummikub packs 106 sturdy tiles: eight sets of numbers from 1 to 13 in four vibrant colors, plus two joker tiles to spice things up. The objective is simple yet engaging: be the first player to use all the tiles from your rack and score the most points over multiple rounds. You achieve this by creating sets – either runs of three or more consecutive numbers of the same color, or groups of three or four of the same number in different colors. The real strategic depth emerges as players can manipulate tiles already on the table, rearranging and adding to existing sets to play their own tiles.
This dynamic gameplay demands a blend of strategic thinking and adaptability. You need a plan to empty your rack, but you also must be ready to shift gears as the game evolves and other players cleverly alter the tile arrangements to their advantage. It’s a captivating challenge that strikes a perfect balance – engaging enough for adults, yet accessible for younger players to grasp the fundamentals quickly. Our experience with our 5½-year-old, Kara, proved just that; she picked up the basic concepts with minimal assistance and was soon enjoying the game.

Rummikub Travel Set accommodates 2-4 players. We discovered that playing with three or four players, while extending the game time, amplifies the strategic possibilities. With more tiles in play, the opportunities for manipulation and clever plays significantly increase, leading to a more dynamic and challenging experience for everyone involved.
Once we were familiar with the rules, which are indeed quite straightforward, Rummikub quickly became a family favorite. Its appeal lies in its ease of setup and engaging gameplay. While the smaller tiles in the travel set are a touch more delicate to handle compared to the original version, this minor compromise is well worth it for the portability. However, it’s worth noting that a reasonably flat and stable surface, like a camping table or even an airplane tray table, is necessary for comfortable play. Rummikub Travel Set isn’t ideal for bumpy car rides, as the tiles are prone to shifting and falling from the racks.
One minor downside is the absence of a dedicated drawstring bag for tile storage. While the box keeps everything contained, a small bag would be a welcome addition for even easier packing and organization, especially when travelling light. However, this is easily remedied with a small pencil case or similar pouch.
Priced at a reasonable £14.99 RRP, the Rummikub Travel Set offers fantastic value. It’s an entertaining and engaging game that’s equally enjoyable at home or on your travels. It has already earned a permanent spot in our suitcase, ready for our next family adventure.
