TravelCenters of America Acquires Russell’s Travel Center on Historic Route 66

TravelCenters of America (TA) has announced the acquisition of Russell’s Travel Center, a well-known stop located in Endee, New Mexico, along the iconic Route 66. According to reports from the Quay County Sun, the deal is set to finalize on October 11 and marks TA’s second acquisition of a Russell’s Travel Center location in New Mexico this year, following the purchase of their Springer site in May. For travelers and locals alike, Russell’s Travel Center has been a fixture, and TA has confirmed plans to maintain the Russell’s name and unique character for the foreseeable future.

The Endee Russell’s Travel Center is more than just a typical rest stop. It boasts a distinctive 1950s-style diner, offering a nostalgic dining experience for visitors. In addition to the diner, the location also includes a Subway franchise for quick bites, a gift shop stocked with souvenirs and travel essentials, and even a chapel, providing a moment of peace for travelers on long journeys. For vehicle needs, a tire shop is conveniently situated nearby. This diverse offering has made Russell’s Travel Center a beloved destination for those traversing Route 66.

Mark Russell, Director of Operations for Russell’s, indicated that TA intends to largely preserve the existing operations at the Endee location. Speaking to Quay County Sun, Russell stated that TA aims to “keep things the way they are,” including maintaining the restaurant’s current menus and recipes. This commitment to preserving the established charm of Russell’s Travel Center will likely be welcomed by loyal customers and those seeking an authentic Route 66 experience.

Adding to the unique appeal of Russell’s Travel Center is its free classic car and vintage memorabilia museum. In a move to preserve this local treasure, TA has agreed to lease the museum space for five years, ensuring its continued operation. Russell explained, “My mom and dad just wanted to keep the museum and keep people being able to look at the cars and stuff.” This dedication ensures that visitors will still be able to enjoy this collection of automotive history and Americana.

The acquisition also brings positive news for the local workforce. Russell noted that the Endee truck stop currently employs 68 individuals, and TA plans to retain all current employees after the ownership transition. This commitment to maintaining employment stability is a significant benefit for the Endee community.

Looking ahead, TA is also planning further expansion in the region. Gilbert Romero, district manager for TA, revealed in an interview with Quay County Sun that the company is moving forward with plans to open a new Travel Center location in Tucumcari, situated off I-40. Groundbreaking for the Tucumcari site is projected for the first quarter of 2024, indicating TA’s continued investment in New Mexico’s travel infrastructure. The acquisition of Russell’s Travel Center and the planned Tucumcari location demonstrate TA’s growing presence in the area and its commitment to serving travelers along major routes like Route 66 and I-40.
